Strengthening ties with the GDUT in China

Throughout the five days leading up to holidays, various activities were developed at the School of Art and Design of the Guangdong University of Technology in Guangzhou, China, which contribute to build up the agreement and collaboration between GDUT and Esdir, framed in the Download OpenDesign project and supported by the two Erasmus outgoing scholarships for a teacher and a student of our school.

The most significant event was the signing ceremony of the new agreement, which will give a renewed impulse to the joint work between two Universities. It was held in the presence of Liu Qionghui, secretary of the Party Committee, of Prof. Dr. Fei Hu, Executive Dean; from Zhang Li, project manager at the School of art and design of the GDUT in Guangzhou, who recently visited us in Logroño, and Beatriz Fernández Ferrer, from Esdir.

In addition, an emotional welcome was given to Celia Arenal Vilahur, 4th Product, first Esdir student who enjoyed a three-months stay in China, for an internship in Designest Industrial Design Co., in Guangzhou, a company with international prestige, with a Red Dot award in 2018. At this moment Celia is perfectly integrated both among her classmates and her colleagues who have welcomed her kindly.

Finally, there was a workshop on project methodology, focused on the first phases of Design Thinking and the Human Centered Design framework, in which 30 GDUT students from the 3rd year industrial design department contacted Esdir students. of 2º of Product, to know and empathize with their needs. The proposal is to design a bamboo stool for Esdir users and on the Open Design principles of democratization, participation and co-creation; and Do it yourself, of domestic manufacture and accessibility to local materials. The project continues to develop and the communication between students from both universities is maintained until the proposals are submitted at the end of May.

The experience has been fantastic, and this type of exchanges have great benefits for the educational community: strengthening relationships and communication with other universities, immersion in other cultures and responsibility for collaborative projects. It is worth working for it.
