Preguntas:

Questions:
a) Nicolás, is “the drawing” the first idea of the artist, or is it, on the contrary, the residue of an idea…

The drawing is the attitude that a creator takes in the act of invoking the void. In this physical-mental activity the drawing turns into a medium that translates ourselves. The drawing responds to a thought in real time, it gives us an idea of what we are and what we are part of. The achievement of a great drawing makes us understand the importance of chaos in order to get to understand clearly the most intimate side of our spirit.

b) Sometimes I heard you say that the drawing (the activity, and the stroke) is part of a continuum in which we scarcely find remarkable differences between an Altamira drawing and a current one. Could we think then about the drawing as an immutable language from the most remote antiquity?

From Altamira till today what has really changed is culture, the sun keeps on fulfilling its cycle, the mountains keep on looking at us from the horizon and also the animals keep on approaching to the rivers to soothe their thirst. The need of the human being to create is a vital impulse, a homage to the universe we are part of.
The drawing is what makes crossing the desert a unique and brutal act.

c) What do you find interesting in contemporary drawing?

I don’t really know what contemporary drawing is, I have an intuition of what drawing could be, what it is for me and the space is has in my life, that undoubtedly is the fundamental thing. The key is the security with which one’s own work is contemplated, and there, only I know what I have opposite me.

d) Are there reasons nowadays to keep on drawing when the spectator seems to be always waiting for “the last thing”? Will it be that a drawing makes us rest our sight, save it, if possible, from the overdose of seeing to which they subject us and we allow to be subjected …

A creator wanders in de desert (the one I mentioned before), with the wish of finding an oasis, that oasis, talking about drawing is the shinning of a twin soul birth, a prolongation of the attitude of the artist towards life. Before a great work our body loses contact with reality to enter into another reality, the reality that a work achieves so that the spectator levitates before himself, getting into in a state where the day, the date and the time turn into an anecdote; men needs the art as art needs men.

e) Observing your drawings, one is conscious of the dialogue that you set between Picasso and Rembrandt, not only because of the nature of the themes, but also because from the first you seem to extract the sensuality of the woman and the way of showing when the artist looks at her and dissects, thinks, or possesses her, and from the second the sincerity of the look, in you work translated into a nervous gesture.

Picasso and Rembrandt reflect the spirit of drawing in its maximum state: the translation of the real thought through drawing, when you contemplate some of their drawings there is a moment in which you don’t know if you are looking at the work or the work is looking at you. That is the power of an artist, to sense the breathing of the universe, the attempt to understand how energy flows inside him. They are two men turned into nature, as two children that see the world with innocence; that is the greatest thing: the virtue of their technique is subdued to the look of a newborn. Both Rembrandt and Picasso look at their drawings with a weird tickling of being seen by themselves: they are the first surprised with what happens in their works and the first to enjoy what they are seeing in them.

f) Women and men in your work apparently participate of a magical rite never consumated, as if we caught your drawings, allow me this physicity, getting to “being” but we always interrupt them in a moment of extreme beauty, as if in a phaustic moment.

The beginning and the end of  work are a key point, the artist understands the end in his own way; however my end is your beginning. A creator analyzes the work from the interior of the idea until he materializes it, and throughout all this process time turns into something mental. From the first idea until the “work” is reached everything is subject to the creation process, and thus the work is born in each impulse, in such a way that the artist has to listen to its beat with the intention of providing it with a life of its own.

g) What qualities do you observe in graphite that cannot be found in other materials and that have made it the basic tool of your work?

Graphite is a revealing element, there are no possible lies with it, it places the artist and faces him against himself, it is a unique instrument.

h) We can group your work in long thematic series …

Not so much in long thematic series but in series that try to find a root of my own drawing. Many times you realize that the elements with which you compose respond to the search of the drawing as an element itself, you search the drawing. It happens the same in sculpture, the weight of an sculpture focuses on the harmony among its parts that generates an unalterable whole; there is no better example than a tree where all its elements need each other, all the shapes complement among themselves creating a composition in which all its elements are part of the same whole. They are blocks that in fact work in contact with the total composition; it is one of the keys, the whole responds to each part finding thus a meaning to all that is part of a drawing, in such a way that once finished I find myself opposite something unalterable, a set of rocks that fit perfectly, an architecture that concentrates its space: the rotundity of composition.

i) Finally, I remember that Kafka said: “writing is for me the most important and necessary thing” … is it for you only drawing, or any activity that entails a risk and a possibility of failure?

The act of living life intensely is what drives me towards drawing, drawing is born in me as an explosion of vitality, a prolongation of me: a writer never leaves writing because he is the writing, a painter never leaves painting because he is the painting, a person that draws never leaves drawing because he is the drawing.

Pregunta:

¿Llegará algún día a hacerlo?

Question:

Georges Didi-Huberman, whom I want to relate to your work, develops in these short sentences an interesting whole theory of seeing: “the act of seeing is not the act of a machine that perceives the real as composed by tautological evidences. The act of giving to see is not the act of offering visible evidences to a pair of eyes that unilaterally seize the “visual gift” to satisfy themselves with it unilaterally. Giving to see is always disturbing seeing, in its act, in its subject, therefore a full, disturbing open operation. Every eye has its own stain, in addition to the information of which in a moment could believe itself the owner.1

Answer:

Of course, offering something to someone involves a will, the act of giving to see is in itself construction of the subject that offers, and therefore giving to see is making the other to look at, but with attention. It is to think the image from the suggestion, not from appearance. The eye is a mechanic organ, the brain too, but in the latter what is seen is transformed into experience. It has always interested me more that stain in the eye that Didi-Huberman talks about, the obstruction of the look generates more desire and I think that it is what in fact disturbs us, what moves us. I like to think that it is always more revealing what stays out of the screen than what is shown in it.

Question:

The vertigo and the astonishment that originally (not so long ago) produced the image of movement has been interiorized until we have turned it into a democratic leisure, into change, and almost at the same time that we assume the moving image as the logic becoming of our time, we currently witness and under the influence of new technologies – obsolete term – the birth of a visual generation.

Answer:

The naivety with which the first cinematographic images were looked at, provokes today certain nostalgia, as also happens when we think of the discovering of perspective and its climax in photography. Movement has allowed us a greater sensation of reality; our intention therefore has always been the search of the perfect mimesis between the sign and its referent. But what will happen when these overlap? Will it happen some day?
In scarcely one hundred years, technology has evolved very quickly, and with it our way of perceiving the world. The image, in its obsession for doubling everything, has transformed the world in a museum; repetition makes the object to be devaluated and to lose its cultural value. The visual generation to which you refer is a generation that suffers from an excess of memory, images juxtapose, creating a collective schizophrenia, where the world is presented with a strange familiarity. Paul Valéry referred to this with the sentence “as water, gas and electric current come to our houses to provide us from far away and through an almost imperceptible manipulation, thus we are also provided with images and sound series that come at a little touch, almost a sign, and in the same way they leave us” Starting from the base that the image is the sign that “something” is “something” exists because there is a sign that represents it, the image as testimony of existence, we exist as far as image. We are only reflection of a light that projected on stone creates shadows.

Question:

Is there a possibility that the only way of perceiving the modernity of image is the moment in which technology generates its own images, its own language, departed from visual and objectual assumptions that nowadays we presume as future … a technological image with capacity to generate an own visual language, advanced and untied from the evolutive continuum of the human race….

Answer:

In a way, I think that it could happen, but it will always be determined by the inertia that a day men imprinted from its origins. Technology has already started to generate images that do not need men to be produced, but this is something that always has accompanied us, don’t forget it, that in order to produce an image we only need light inside a dark box, and a witness, men. Sometimes I think that we are not so essential, nature produces images and we, later on, give the value that interests us. But as Roland Barthes said “language is the institution of speech”, therefore visual language is a convention created by men (we are able to mimic the vision of a fly, but we need devices that allow us, we depend on prosthesis to complete our perception) that depend on it. But I think that one day the moment will arrive in which that image exists, and when this happens, human technology will be equated to nature, closing a circle where men will be displaced, will be the useful death of it. The world were we live will follow its course under the inertia of the social force that one day was imprinted and men will stop existing as we know it today.

1) the need and the fascination  for seeing we have (as voyeurs) through any immediate means screen, specifically webcam images, closed circuit television, surveillance cameras, etc. is due to the fact that these images have not been contaminated by the bill of the real yet, or because they are part of a suprarreality where there are no defects, there is no manipulation, etc.

Answer

In my opinion, we have changed from the need to see, to the imperious need to be seen, from being visible to the world, and in this extreme exhibitionism we make circular images that reaffirm our identity. And the degree of reality of such images is not important nowadays, what matters is that the body, the appearances, transcend reaching an autonomy that creates a certain device that tries to deceive death. Nowadays everything is recorded, stored, filed in a virtual world (cyberspace) that moves like electricity, the image turns into flow of information, and there is where it loses it image quality (object). Surveillance cameras generate images whose function is that of control of the individual, but if we imagine, if they were there by beings from the other world with the aim of studying human behaviour, our rhythms and our ways of relation? The other is shown a being of strange familiarity. But that other thing is ourselves, that, moved by a technological obsession, end up making the object disappear, being owners of our own disappearance.

2) Is it possible that those poor quality, fast, private images, still keep a bit of the texture of that truth that at the beginning of the cinematograph dazzled the audience of the magic scenes by the Lumière brothers?

Answer

it is difficult to know that, since the eyes with which the scenes by the Lumière brothers were seen are not the same eyes with which today such scenes are seen. But one thing we can be sure about is that the images created today do not generate the same impact that produced on the audience of the first cinematographic projection. It is interesting that it can be seen in certain new devices, such as the webcam you mentioned before or closed circuit video, a parelellism with the first filming by the Lumière brothers, since they filmed with the only intention of recording what happened, without noticing that what they were doing were “documentaries”. The one-time vision of the first films, that primitive image, will be that one that later claims itself in the modernity film as the way of higienization of the look.

3) To what extent the file constitutes in your work an imprint of the real, of what happened, the ascertainment of a fact …

Answer

The use of the file image plays a very important role in the story, since it deals with the idea that cinema is a language created by other world beings. The recycled image also allows working the discourse as a collage, achieving referring to images from the past. I’m interested in the filming of family films, and the use that Alan Berliner makes of them, and, perhaps since I know his work has motivated to incorporate them in mine. Appropriating images belonging to other people, already existing, allows the deconstruction of the initial meaning for the construction of a new discourse. Editing acquires thus its maximal expression, since it is the one from which the story is articulated. All of us remember the images we saw one day in some place and they are stored in our memory and from it we rescue some of greater intensity, some others not so much, but related to each other, generate a new image. This mental process can be extrapolated to the moviola (sorry, the computer today). The file therefore will not work as imprint of the real but as fragments removed from the ruins of reality.
